It has been over 20 years since the release of Baldur’s Gate 2; that’s two decades that have passed since BioWare released a Dungeons & Dragons RPG based on the 2nd Edition ruleset. It’s not all that often you wait that long for a sequel. Now, in 2023 and on the 5th Edition of D&D, Larian Studios once again looks to thrust players into the grand adventures of The Forgotten Realms.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Review

Having just watched the credits roll after nearly 90 hours of time in Baldur’s Gate 3, I really don’t know where to start. There are so many experiences I want to share, countless stories I want to tell, and shocking consequences I’m still processing. I want to say everything, all at once, which leaves my brain a confuddled mess and unable to say much at all. Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of those games that transcends mere entertainment; it’s not simply a game you finish and forget about. It’s an experience that will stay with you for years.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a shining example of a talented, dedicated, and passionate development studio working to the very highest of standards. I can’t even begin to imagine the complexities of developing a game with so many moving pieces, so many variables, choices, decisions, consequences, and outcomes, and it’s delivered in such a way that nothing else really comes close.

Nothing here is really new; most of it has been done before. However, rarely does a game deliver on every single aspect of development, every promise, every expectation.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is that good.

The story begins as your hero finds themselves trapped aboard an Illithid vessel. Infected with a deadly parasite, you race to find a cure before you turn into one of Dungeons & Dragons most iconic enemies: the Mind Flayers. It’s a story that begins very black and white. If you don’t find a cure, you turn into a monster that eats brains in order to survive. Those first few moments of simplicity soon fade away to unveil a narrative that any Dungeon Master would be envious of creating.

I really don’t want to spoil anything more than has been shown in the trailers and pre-release footage, but it’s a fantastic story and one that is entirely unique to your hero. Baldur’s Gate 3 is far from the first game to feature dialogue choices but in recent years the illusion of choice has been more prevalent, decisions that appear to put the power in the hands of the player only for the choice to not really matter. Baldur’s Gate 3 is so far on the opposite end of that spectrum, the line has become a dot.

Decisions I made during my first hours of the game provided opportunities and consequences 80 hours later. Whilst exploring I stumbled upon an Owlbears nest, a cave filled with the bones and the remains of unfortunate adventurers that had trodden this path before me. It’s a fearsome creature and one I’ve encountered many times in my D&D days. Approaching quietly, I cast Speak with Animals, hoping to negotiate with the monstrosity before I became its next meal. As I got closer I noticed it was protecting a cub, so the outcome was looking bleak.

Needless to say, things didn’t go to plan and I ended up slaughtering the beast right in front of its offspring, which then began eating its mother before I’d even sheathed my sword. Rummaging around I looted an Owlbear egg and thought nothing more of it. That Owlbear cub then somehow manages to make its way to a goblin camp and can be “saved” as an optional companion to help populate your camp.

But wait, there’s more.

About 15 hours later, I stumbled upon an old lady that wanted me to steal a Githyanki egg, but there was an option to convince her to take the Owlbear egg instead. Then, about 60 hours after that, I meet the lady in Baldur’s Gate and learn what happened with the egg. This is one of hundreds, if not thousands of events that shape and alter the world of Faerun. Baldur’s Gate 3 has everything, from massive changes that shake the very foundation of The Forgotten Realms, to charming and heartwarming stories featuring just a mother and daughter, in a single home in the games biggest city. The depth and scope of the choices and consequences system is unrivaled and creates one of the most immersive and rewarding game worlds the genre has ever seen.

I know I waffled for about five minutes there, but I really wanted to drill in just how expansive this world is. There’s nothing else like it, and I lack the articulation to really do it credit. I’m a gamer, not a writer. So now that you know Baldur’s Gate 3’s living and breathing Dungeons & Dragons experience nails the narrative, how fares everything else?

Baldur’s Gate 3’s combat, not all too dissimilar to other works of Larian Studios, is the most enjoyable and accurate representation of the Dungeons & Dragons combat system in the industry today. It somehow manages to conform to the necessary rules and mechanics of a video-game whilst simultaneously allowing for the ridiculously creative and near limitless possibilities of a game that was designed to be played with a pencil, a piece of paper, and your imagination.

It’s turn-based roots will immediately turn some folk away. It’s slow, methodical, and pure strategy. Some of the battles can last over an hour, so it’s definitely not going to work for everyone. However, if the turn-based genre is one that appeals, the combat on offer is incredible. Each environment is unique, verticality and the environment play a huge role. Leaping over chasms to reach distant enemies, shooting chandelier’s down onto unsuspecting enemies below, triggering traps at just the right time, no two battles ever feel the same and while some improvements to AI speed and decision making wouldn’t hurt, the combat never got stale.

And that’s just about where you fight, that’s not including what you fight, and who fights at your side. Even now, after nearly 90 hours, I’m finding new and exciting ways of combining my different characters abilities. Throwing out an ice spell to try and trip enemies, followed up by a fireball to melt the ice, and then an electric jolt to fry anyone still standing. These powerful combinations are present across every class and the synergy potential in combat is rewarding from start to finish. I suppose you could just use Gust of Wind and knock 12 goblins off the edge of a cliff too; both work.

I’m not usually keen on games that require me to manage entire parties, as I much rather focus on developing a single character. While the micro-managing of items and inventory definitely felt overwhelming at times, the characters themselves made it worthwhile. I don’t think any of the companions are guaranteed. Certain choices you make mean you may never meet, while others mean they die at your feet, and that makes me sad.

It’s sad because each character is entirely unique, expertly voiced, and each with an intricate and emotional story to tell, and some people may never experience those stories. Every companion has their own story arc, often playing roles alongside the main story itself, but every character grows with you and changes based on their experiences. What do you do when a character you’ve grown to love for their combat prowess needs to make a decision that you find morally questionable? Do you back them up through fear of losing an ally, or is the weight of the consequence of an immoral act too much to bear? Even these complicated stories, most of which last the duration of the entire game, have multiple paths at multiple points, each offering insight into different aspects of the characters past and future.

That’s not to say that every encounter is an exhausting exercise in morality and consequence. During my adventures I had “romantic encounters” with a bear, a rather aggressive Githyanki, a flamboyant vampire, and a succubus that then proceeded to imitate my form and spread delight amongst The Forgotten Realms on my behalf. I spoke with a military-like pigeon, Commander Lightfeather, leader of the finest aerial communication regiment this side of the Chionthar. A pig who was all too eager to share its newly formed stubble, an ox that turned into some gelatinous demon of one form or another. Every counter, be it pigeon or pig, has be crafted with such care and attention. Moments will disgust, horrify, but also charm and entertain.

What’s even more remarkable is the technical state of the game. For the vast majority of the experience, I didn’t encounter any bugs. My game still hasn’t crashed once, and none of the dialogue or encounters have had any issues but unfortunately, the latter stages of the game do struggle. Exploring Baldur’s Gate, while a visual feast and an explorers playground, the frame rate is horrible, nearly unplayable in certain places. Much can be said for the final battle, while absolutely epic, it definitely needs some post-launch TLC.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is nothing short of a masterpiece. The story is incredible, the world gorgeous and immersive, voice-over and writing of the highest quality, an amazing soundtrack, everything comes together in near perfect harmony. It’s not only the best RPG of the year, it’s the RPG of a generation.

Players will have to come to terms with suicide with the release of Rasul Mono and Ratalaika Games' Acceptance. Should players traverse this dark path in this story-driven thriller?
The residents of Packmore need players’ help once againi with the release of SMG Studio, Devm Games, and Team17's Moving Out 2. Promising to be even wackier than its predecessor, should players move out and get to work?
Quick kills are back on the menu with the release of Bevel bakery, Just For Games, and Abiding Bridge's Sclash. A game where timing is everything, does this 2D samurai fighter turn the traditional formula on its head?
Roughly a year after being first shown, Deck13 and Focus Entertainment's Atlas Fallen arrives between Baldur's Gate 3 and Starfield. Does the game do enough to stand out in what has proven to be a stellar year for gaming, or will it fall by the wayside?

I’m playing an Order of the Ancients Oath Paladin but I assume this process is similar for other Paladin Oaths and any other classes with a similar mechanic. If you go against the teachings of your oath and become an Oathbreaker, you will have a new condition on your character called “Oath Broken”. Reading this condition tells you that you will be visited the next time you rest at camp. When you wake after a full rest, you will find an Oathbreaker Knight waiting to speak with you in your camp.

How To Reclaim Your Broken Oath In Baldur’s Gate 3

Speaking with the Oathbreaker Knight gives two choices. You can continue down this path and become a fully-fledged Oathbreaker, or you can attempt to repair your oath. If you want to reclaim your oath, make that choice in the conversation. Then tell the knight you wish to take up your oath again. You will then need to pay 1,000 gold to have everything restored. Feels a bit cheap, right?

Once you pay the fee, all of your abilities and actions will be restored and you can continue as normal.

Kill The Vampire Spawn Or Release Them In Baldur’s Gate 3

If You Decide They’re Too Dangerous – They Need To Die
If the vampire spawn survived, they will question the decision. Astarion claims they are not like them. He then uses the staff and you watch as each of them explode. Astarion lets the other vampire spawn leave. When you speak with Astarion later, he appears to regret making this choice.

If You Decide Let’s Release Them. They Deserve The Same Chance You Got
If you decide to release them all, Astarion uses the staff to free all of the Vampire Spawn. This will break certain Oaths for the Paladin. You free the Vampire spawn and as you leave, you meet the Gur’s. They are initially upset that you have released the vampires, but seem more understanding once they realize the children were freed. We will update this if there are further consequences.

If You Choose Why Not Just Leave Them? They’re Not Out Responsibility
If the vampire spawn survived the battle, they will ask if you are being serious, they cannot be left there to die. Astarion will snap the staff in hand and wash his hands of everything. The vampire spawn will be stuck forever.

The Necromancy Of Thay Book Choices Guide For Baldur’s Gate 3

If You Decide To Read The Book
If you open the book, you can no longer decide to give it to Astarion. You will need to made a DC 10 Wisdom Saving Throw, a DC 15 Wisdom Saving Throw, and a DC 20 Wisdom Saving Throw. You will then learn Speak With The Dead as a spell you can cast. You are unable to read the final page so the quest continues. It’s quite a lengthy process to read the book so check out our video guide on how to read the final page of the book. You get a powerful Necromancy spell that allows you to use a corpse to summon 6 ghouls. It does warn that you will suffer consequences later, we’ve yet to get there.

You can head to this house in Baldur’s Gate and speak with the Necromancer there. There is a secret door that looks like a wall but it’s easy to spot. Make sure you are using the character that read the final page. Save it first, if you speak with the wrong character the conversation won’t be available again.

If You Give The Book To Astarion
If you give the book to Astarion, he can read it like anyone else. However, on one of the steps Astarion has the option to do a Wisdom Saving Throw and “Drink in the darkness”. This is an option that no other character has. Once Astarion finishes reading the book in this way, he can read the final page the same as anyone else. I had already completed Astarion’s storyline so it’s difficult to be sure, but I think allowing him to read it gives him the ability to perform the right at the end of his arc.

If You Destroy The Book
If you decide to drop the book and destroy it, you will need to attack it with Radiant Damage, it is immune to all other damage types. Abilities, such as Divine Smite, do not work. It needs to be an area of effect ability that does Radiant Damage. I used Sunbeam. Once the book is destroyed, it will summon two shades you will have to kill. The book remains destroyed and the quest is complete.

This guide on Where To Use The Strange Flowery Key In Baldur’s Gate 3 will tell you everything you need to know about completing this stage of the quest so you can find the secret entrance, use the Flowery key, and grab your evidence.

For this stage of the quest you need to reach the South Span of Wyrm’s Crossing. This is North of the temple and requires you to either bypass or get through the South Span Checkpoint. You can easily bypass the checkpoint by taking the path to the East and then climbing up to South Span from below.

Once you are at South Spam of Wyrm’s Crossing, head to the large house on the left, Fraygo’s Flophouse. Once inside, head upstairs and you will see a room full of beds and chests. On the wall in the corner of one of the rooms is a ladder, use the ladder to climb upstairs.

Once upstairs, use the Flowery Key by clicking on the wardrobe that’s against the door. This will open up a new area. Inspect the evidence inside to progress with the quest.

When you reunite with Lae’Zel, you can free her from a cage and then she gives you a choice. In this guide on Attack The Tieflings Or Attack Lae’Zel In Baldur’s Gate 3 we’ll explain the immediate effects and outcomes of both choices so you can decide based on where you want your story to go.

It’s worth noting that Baldur’s Gate 3 has thousands of choices, hundreds of different outcomes. Some decisions will have a minor and immediate impact, others will have longer-lasting impact that can alter the entire game. This is one such choice as one of these paths means removing a companion, permanently.

Attack The Tieflings Or Attack Lae’Zel In Baldur’s Gate 3

If You Choose Attack Lae’Zel
There are two possible outcomes here. If you attack Lae’Zel and kill her, she’s dead. She will not be a companion and you will not encounter her for the rest of the game. However, the game does introduce a Passive ability called “Toggle: Non-Lethal Attacks”. This causes all damage done by that character to be non-lethal, meaning it will not kill the target. I thought this meant you were able to knock Lae’Zel out and not kill her, but every effort using this ability results in the “Dead” condition being applied. I don’t think you can avoid killing Lae’Zel if you make this choice. Shadowheart will approve of this choice.

If You Choose Attack The Tieflings
Shadowheart disapproves and Astarion approves this decision. You will have to fight the Tieflings. However, you are able to knock these unconscious. I have not encountered them again yet but as a Paladin, this did cause me to break my oath, which comes with its own problems. This is the only choice you can make if you want to have Lae’Zel as a companion.

Deceive The Tieflings
I think you need to be proficient in deception to get this choice. You tell the Tieflings that Lae is dangerous and they should run. They will say they have other things to attend to and leave you to freeing Lae if you want. They also mention a big explosion.

After the hag dungeon, you have a choice. In this guide on Resurrect Mayrina’s Husband Or Snap The Wand In Baldur’s Gate 3 we’ll break down the different choices you can make during the conversation with Mayrina as there are a few different outcomes for this particular conversation.

There are multiple paths during this conversation. You can ignore the wand entirely and just mourn alongside Mayrina, this is likely the best outcome. The other outcomes are either you snap the wand and send Mayrina away angry or resurrect her husband. If you choose the latter, you then have another branching choice. You can either give the wand to Mayrina or you can keep it for yourself.

Wyll’s storyline sees him sent to recover an “asset” in Baldur’s Gate 3. This guide on Use The Device On The Left Or Right Saving Mizora In Baldur’s Gate 3 breaks down what happens depending on which device you decide to activate and whether or not Wyll’s pact is broken.

This is a pretty major choice as it decides whether or not Wyll will remain with you as a companion. If you do not make that choice, Wyll is banished to hell and will not return to your party.

If You Choose To Use The Device On The Left
This will kill Mizora but with it, Wyll will also be sent to the hells. Leaving your party. You will not be able to use him again.

If You Choose The Device On The Right
You link with the device and it frees Mizora. The rest of the cut-scene plays out identically to smashing the pod.

If You Try To Smash The Pod
You smash open the pod and Mizora is freed. She explains that part of the terms and conditions of the pact give her 6 months to release Wyll from his pledge. She also says that she has given Wyll the ability to reveal more about his contract with you.

If you find the secret bookcase entrance in Balthazar’s room, there is a choice to make. This guide on Destroy The Ritual Circle Or Forge The Lantern In Baldur’s Gate 3 will break down the two different choices you can make and explain what happens after you make each choice.

At this point in the story, you have already learned Gale’s role in what’s to come. He’s to sacrifice himself to earn the forgiveness of his god and former lover. As such, whether or not he has her favor seems pointless at this moment in time. However, you are still given three different paths to choose here.

Whatever path you choose, if you want to create the lantern, you must combine a Broken Moonlantern and a Dead Pixie. It MUST be the Broken Moonlantern next to the bench, it cannot be one from anywhere else.

If You Choose Forge The Lantern
If you choose to Forge the Shadow Lantern with Gale, he will not need to complete the DC 30 skill check. You get to keep the lantern which comes with a summon spirit spell. You will not get the boon from Mystra later in the game.

If You Choose Destroy The Ritual Circle
If you destroy it, you feel a reassuring touch of Mystra on your shoulder. If you get Gale to destroy the circle, he destroys it. Nothing else is said. A short while later in the game during a conversation with Gale, he will note Mystra’s presence and you will get a boon that gives advantage on Concentration checks. This will either be for Gale or for you, whoever destroys the circle.

If You Attempt To Use The Ritual Circle Yourself
If you attempt to do this yourself you will need a DC 30 difficulty class check. This means you need to roll 30 on an Arcana Check, or a critical success on a flat 20.
