When you arrive at the ship follow the green blood stains on the floor North to the cave. The Alien Blaster is inside.

Update: It seems that beginning the quest chain to locate Nick Valentine is a big trigger in this quest. Continue through the main story until you have the mission to find Nick Valentine. Then follow the steps above and you should initiate the event.
