Exploring a post-apocalyptic wasteland is no fun alone but thankfully Fallout 4 is full of companions you can take on your journey. This feisty young companion is located in Diamond City. She helps you enter the city during the quest chain, speak to her after the quest objectives to make her a companion.
Cait is deadly in combat and fantastic with locks. Head to the combat area within Boston and clear out all the Raiders there, Cait will join you soon after.
Another companion located off the beaten track. Head to the HQ of the Railroad and check in the Old North Church. He can also help you join a new faction.
Another seemingly dodgy contact within Goodneighbor. You need to complete the quest associated with this companion, the Long Road Ahead, to unlock his services.
During the quest Curtain Call there’s a large tower, Trinity Tower, at the top you’ll find Strong locked inside a cell. Release him from his cell to recruit him as a companion.
Early in the game you’ll come across the town of Concord. There’s a quest there called When Freedom Calls. Complete that to unlock Preston as a companion.

Paladin Danse Know Your Enemy Special Perk – An extra 20% damage when fighting Synths, Super Mutants and Ferals
Codsworth Robot Sympathy Special Perk – Additional damage resistance, +10%, when fighting against energy weapons
Curie Combat Medic Special Perk – Automatically heal 100 health points if health falls below 10%. Has a long cooldown
Piper Gift of Gab Special Perk – Speech challenges and new location discovery reward experience points increased by 100%
Nick Valentine Close to Metal Special Perk – An extra chance when hacking a terminal and 50% cooldown
Cait Trigger Rush Special Perk – When health drops below 25% action points regenerate at a quicker pace
Deacon Cloak & Dagger Special Perk – Stealth boys duration increased by 40% and an additional 20% damage to sneak attacks
John Hancock Isodoped Special Perk – Critical comes 20% quicker when impacted by 250 rads or more
MacCready Killshot Special Perk – V.A.T.S Headshots increased damage by 20% extra
X6-88 Shield Harmonics Special Perk – Additional damage resistance, +20%, against energy weapons
Strong Berserk Special Perk – An increase in melee weapon damage of 20% when health falls below 25%
Preston Garvey United We Stand Special Perk – +20% to damage and damage resistance when in combat with 3 or more opponents
