On April 29th, 145,012 players in Russia helped break an online record by all playing on a Moscow-based Alfa server. The Vice President of the Games Division at Mail Ru, the company handling Warface in Russia said this about Warface and why it had attracted so many people “Warface stands out from other shooters for many reasons. The Fact that it’s created with CryENGINE 3, its exciting co-op and versus modes and the constant updates to the game world all set it apart and have helped to ensure its popularity with players and press. Splinter Cell Blacklist Multiplayer Announced

splinter-cell-blacklist1Hey guys, Splinter Cell Blacklist will have multiplayer. The Spies vs Mercs multiplayer is back and will be available in the next reincarnation of Splinter Cell game. We have talked about the Spies vs. Mercs multiplayer in past splinter cell games on our podcast if you are interested in what we think about Splinter Cell multiplayer. Basically the mercs are a high powered deadly shooting team that has to defend a compound from being broken into. There are tools that the mercs have to identify and destroy the spies. The Spies are basically acting as Sam Fisher would in the single player game. The shadows are your friend and the environment will lead to assassinations of the mercs quietly. Each team will have a shot at being a spy and a merc for every game. Here is a trailer with a little more information.

Another Techland Game Announced

HellraidTechland (Yep the developers of Dead Island and Call of Juarez) are working on a first-person… melee game. Yep another one, except this one is set in a fantasy world! Maybe that will work out better for them? This new project called Hellraid is headed to the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with no announced date yet. The game will be a story-driven melee adventure that can be played through solo or co-op with leaderboards. If you would like to check out more about Hellraid, head over to their official site. I personally probably will want to have nothing to do with this game unless they show something really amazing at E3. The last entry with Dead Island Riptide still has me looking at my wallet with fear missing the $40 I spent.

Watch_Dogs Release Date Announced

Watch_Dogs_box_artUbisoft has finally grown a pair and announced a release date for the heavily anticipated Watch_Dogs. Watch_Dogs will be coming out on November 19th for the Xbox 360, PC, Wii U and PlayStation 3. Also attached in the announcement is that Watch_Dogs will be released “at the launch of the PlayStation®4 from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE). The game is also planned for other next generation consoles.” Does this mean that the PlayStation 4 will be out by November 19th? Or does it just mean a late launch for next generation consoles. A new gameplay trailer and making of trailer have also been released for fans to check out.

New Update for Wii U

miiverse-image
Nintendo released a new update last week that has a few interesting updates for Wii U owners. The first exciting thing is that the Wii U will now be able to handle load screens much quicker when switching between apps and moving to the home screen. Also available now is Kirby’s Adventure for 30 cents on the Wii U eShop. One of the most exciting things in the update is that the Miiverse will be able to be viewed on computers or mobile devices so Wii U owners can view all of the awesomeness of the Miiverse communities everywhere at https://miiverse.nintendo.net/.

Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon is Out

far_cry_3_blood_dragon_logo_37_thumbFar Cry 3 Blood Dragon released this week on April 30th and has been opening to some pretty positive reviews. Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon is a standalone piece of DLC for Far Cry 3 that can be purchased for $15 on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. The game features weird 80’s action movie like aesthetics that are cemented into the players mind by using scan lines on the screen and neon lighting. Some of the weapons in the game are from famous action movies such as the Terminator’s shotgun and RoboCop’s laser pistol gun. If you want to know how much awesome nonsense this game is check out this trailer.

It’s been a long time since a Nintendo console has launched with a Mario game. E3 was all a buzz because of the announcement that New Super Mario Bros. U would be available at launch for the new Wii U console. New Super Mario Bros. U is more of the same 2D side scrolling. However, Nintendo brings back the best of the 2D mechanics and aesthetics while at the same time finding new tidbits that won’t bore the Mario virtuoso.

The first thing you will notice about New Super Mario Bros. U is that it is cute as hell. Everything from the enviornment, enemies and Baby Yoshi will interact with the music. I almost broke my cute button when Baby Yoshi started singing the main line of every song from the level I was in. That being said some people don’t like the cuteness and don’t like the “wah wah” of the dancing koopa turtles.

The level design is as good as Baby Yoshi is cute. After playing New Super Mario Bros. 2 on the 3DS I had my doubts. But it is obvious that the higher level staff worked on these levels as opposed to the lower level staff of NSMB2. There are tons of nooks and crannies to explore and devilish star coins to grab. The one complaint I do have of the level design is the backgrounds. Some of them on the HD console look beautiful. One level in particular called Starry Night is breathtaking. However moving from a grass zone, to a sand zone, to a ice zone and then on is just not original. It would have been nice if the lands of New Super Mario Bros. U would have been just a little bit more unique.

That’s not to say that there isn’t original ideas in NSMBU. The Flying Squirrel Suit is a cool addition with similar ideas. With this new suit Mario and company can glide like the Tanookie Tail from past games. However there is also a boost that you can preform mid flight that will launch Mario a decent height into the air. There is also a new addition with Baby Yoshi. This little fella has a hunger for pretty much anything he can find. One bad thing though, while Baby Yoshi is adorable, he tends to practically break levels. When you have a Baby Yoshi with you, as long as you move forward slowly you are guaranteed an easy level. Which may be good for pacing, but not particularly good level design for the people looking for a challenge.

Another way in which NSMBU does break away from the same old same old Mario is through different challenge modes that where added. These challenge modes are great because they allow people to do what people have doing for years. Show off their insane Mario skills. There challenge modes embrace the speed run, coin collecting, enemy hopping fun the maestros of Mario have been perfecting for years. Your best runs and scores are saved in video form to show off to everyone for the future. The challenge mode adds depth and shows creativity for the people over at Nintendo.

One of the new features that is only possible with the new hardware is the interaction in Miiverse. For those of you who haven’t been keeping up with the Wii U hullabaloo, the Miiverse is a place where people can talk about the game. This brings in a whole new social side to Mario that I only remember from the playground. People can share tips, hints and give warnings, with screenshots, of secrets hidden in Mario World just like when I was told about the secret pipes in the original Super Mario Bros.

Unlike the movement forward in communication with Miiverse, the multiplayer seems to be more of the same from the past. It would have been nice to have seen Nintendo put their foot down with the new console and put in some online multiplayer. But with NSMBU you will find yourself holding Wii remotes doing the same paces as the other games in the New Super Mario games of late. There is a small twist where the person with the Game Pad can create platforms, but honestly this parent mode just doesn’t impress me much. The only saving grace is that multiplayer is usually a toy to Super Mario Brothers and is only really for messing around for a little bit with some friends.

This review is based on a retail copy of the Wii-U version of New Super Mario Bros. U

The halo games are something special. Plenty of people, Xbox fan boys or not, have fond memories of the Halo franchise. The big question that was on everyone’s mind when 343 Industries took over for Bungie was are they going to break Halo? I can safely say that they did not. 343’s entrance into the Halo Universe gives past players a more than competent Halo game while at the same time delivering something new, a spartan named John.

The Halo gameplay is something that is not broken, so 343 Industries did not try to fix it. In fact I would say they brought it back to it’s basics. There is no dual wielding and I could care less. The guns all have different aspects to them, fire rate, and properties that make them feel unique and yet feel somewhat familiar. Every weapon whether it is Forerunner tech, Covenant or Human will be easy to pick up, learn and look fantastic. The first time you pick up a Forerunner rifle you will fall in love with the way everything looks and feels. Even reloading the new weapons looks good and gives me a little happy feeling in my insides.

The sprawling terrain is beautiful.[/caption]The level design for the campaign is also very good. As Master Chief, you and Cortana will sprawl many different terrains. From jungles to desert like terrain to large Forerunner constructs that feel like they fit into the Halo Universe perfectly. No where did I feel out of place. For huge Halo fans this is a huge plus. For people looking for the Halo Universe to move into a different area however, this may not be such a good thing.

One thing that has changed is a couple of the power suits and Master Chief’s movement in general. You can now run by clicking in the left stick which drastically changes the pacing of the game. No longer does it feel like a struggle to get the Chief to travel a significant amount of distance. The powers also change gameplay. There is a drone that will shoot at enemies, distracting them while you make your way for the flank as well as a thruster pack that will let the Chief move quickly around objects. The shield boost armor ability has also been changed to a directional facing shield with a little bit of a movement disadvantage when it is deployed. These changes, especially the running, needed to be made and have brought the Master Chief into new territory in big ways.

All of these things make Halo 4 a good game, but what makes the new installment so amazing is the story telling and presentation. 343 is a handpicked studio from some of the greatest in the business and it shows in the presentation of this game. The cut scenes have deep meaning to them because the faces, eyes and other animation work looks outstanding. When you are looking at the faces during a cut scene you can really feel the emotion in the eyes of the person you are talking to, especially when it is Cortana.

Cortana and Master Chief’s relationship gets fleshed out.
Leading up to the game, 343 Industries said they wanted to bring the humanity back into Master Chief, and I think they did a very good job. The presentation backed by the story of Halo 4 makes me want to call the Master Cheif John and to think of him as a man and less as a killing machine. There is some weirdness to parts of the story. If you are not a huge Halo buff then some of the story plots will not be explained as much as they probably should have been. Also some of the information is hidden in the Domain Terminals that you have to find, exit out of Halo 4 and go to Halo Waypoint to really understand the story. All of that on the table, the story is still amazing to me.

After finishing the 6-7 hour campaign on normal there is still a little bit of room for replay ability. There are upgrade skulls, harder difficulties, challenges and co-op to keep people playing. Going through these sections multiple times can feel different if you chose to make it feel that way, but I would think that the campaign only has legs for somewhere between 10-15 hours. This could be a disappointment for some and to others it makes no difference.

It makes no difference to some because god only knows how many hours most people will play Halo 4 multiplayer. New to the series is a mode called Spartan Ops. This mode has co-op campaign style story missions that take place 6 months after the events that happen in the campaign. These missions are fun, so far, and are promised for at least another 10 weeks. Some people argue that firefight is a better mode than Spartan Ops, but I feel like these small story missions are a better option. After a while the only reason I would play firefight in Reach was for the challenges and experience. Spartan Ops, however, I can see myself completing every time they come out to find more about the Halo Universe that 343 Industries is building.

The competitive multiplayer has seen a bit of an overhaul. Do I dare say it has been COD-ified? There are customizable loud outs and abilities that people can specialize in. Finally you can pick to start with Covenant sticky grenades rather than the Spartan Frags if you unlock them. There is even kill streak like perks that will drop down a reinforcement of your choosing. Basically the multiplayer in Halo 4 has all of the amazing things that you loved about past Halo games with an even bigger carrot at the end of the stick to keep you salivating for more levels.

This review is based on a retail copy of the Xbox 360 version of Halo 4
