Firstly, make sure you have your Varmint Rifle equipped and the necessary .22 Sedative ammo. You need to aim for specific targets. Do not use it on birds, rabbits, squirrels, if you use the ammo on smaller prey, it will be killed instantly. This upsets Harriet, so it’s a very good idea to avoid doing so. You’re not here to kill, you’re here to study.
Find a deer or something smaller. Hit them with a few shots and then follow them. I targeted an American Pronghorn Buck. It took about 15-20 shots total. If you let the animal escape, the sedative wears off very fast. Hit them with as many shots as possible, you will soon see the animation change. They will no longer be sprinting, they will hobble. Eventually it will drop to the floor and then you can collect your Sample. You can also buy medicines from Harriet that allows you to revive the animal after you have sedated it. Waking the animal gives you further Naturalist experience points.
Once you have some Samples return to Harriet’s location and sell them to her. This is where the bulk of the experience points comes from, you get Experience Points for each Sample sold, and a small bit of cash too..
