How To Open Balthazar’s Bookcase In Moonrise Towers In Baldur’s Gate 3
Protruding books on a bookcase and a secret area behind. This guide on How To Open Balthazar’s Bookcase In Moonrise Towers In Baldur’s Gate 3 walks you through solving this puzzle as the protruding books may make you believe it’s a combination puzzle. However, if you start interacting with the protruding books, you will either fill the room with poison or summon undead creatures to attack you.
Both doors to Balthazar’s Room are a DC 30 to unlock. This means you need a critical success, a flat 20 roll, or enough modifiers to reach a 30-skill check. However, you are able to enter either door if you have Balthazar’s Room Key. Make sure to check all of the enemies you kill downstairs, and those on the bridge on the way in, to find the key on a number of the corpses. Once you have the key, you can enter the room freely. The poison gas just gives the poisoned condition, it does no damage itself.

Update: Make sure you interact with the top right protruding book first and then follow these steps. There is another book nearby called “Attention Acolytes”. If you read it you can gather clues that the books are trapped and at the bottom, it mentions that the Absolute wants a beating heart.
On the altar in the center of the room, there is a heart. Pick up the heart and then head over to the pedestal next to the bookshelf. Place a heart on the pedestal and it will open the bookcase. You are then faced with a choice, either destroy the ritual circle or forge the lantern.
