Set 12,000 years before the present in the Mesolithic Age, Far Cry Primal takes the Far Cry formula to the Stone Age and plunges players into a world of limitless danger and adventure. Players take on the role of Takkar, a seasoned hunter stranded in the land of Oros after his hunting party is ambushed. Alone and defenseless, Takkar must rise to become the apex predator and lead his own tribe.
Being set in the Stone Age makes this the first Far Cry without guns of any kind. Instead, the player is limited to melee weapons such as spears, clubs and axes, as well as bows. As in previous Far Cry games, survival is the top priority, and players must contend with both the dangerous wildlife of Oros and other tribes. As Takkar gains power and builds up his own tribe, he can drive out other tribes out of Oros and establish his supremacy. Of course, at the same time, Takkar is also responsible for protecting his own tribe from other attackers.
The Stone Age setting also means that players cannot purchase or sell weapons, instead relying on crafting the weapons using materials scavenged in the world. As the player progresses through the game, they get access to more powerful, lethal weapons. The game features a day and night cycle, and some of the enemies in the game become even more deadly by night, forcing players to learn how to light a fire, and use the fire as a tool of personal protection, or hunting during night time.
The game features powerfully deadly wildlife, such as saber toothed tigers, woolly mammoths, and massive elk. Apart from fighting the wildlife, players can choose to tame the wildlife by giving them food to eat, turning the animals into companions for the player. Players can issue them orders and take advantage of their unique abilities. Takkar also possesses an owl, who can be used to scout enemy outposts and highlight enemies, using the special “owl vision”. The landscape of Oros itself stretches into many different biomes, including taiga, redwood forests, glacial mountains and swamps.
